A Fishing Date is the Best Kind of Date

When I’m stressed, fishing is my escape. It’s something I did as a kid with my family and it was always a “go to.” I missed those days where the sun hit my face and the hook was wet and there were no worries in the world. There was a pond my dad used to take my brother and I to with my pink fishing pole and my girly attitude. It was one of my favorite memories as a kid.

The first fish I caught as a kid was a proud moment for me and maybe a little slimy! But, it was fun, energetic, and just a rush. I had my pink fishing pole and I was going to catch those fish. It was a pretty amazing time in my life and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.

I’m 24 years old, and fishing is one of the best escapes that I could possibly imagine. Its relaxing, quiet, and just fun! I never thought I would’ve loved fishing as much as I did when I got older. After meeting Eric, he really showed me the ins and outs of fishing. (he’s quite a country boy) Which is one of the reasons I fell in love with him. He made everything easy and showed what lures to use and what not to use.

A fishing lure is a type of artificial fishing bait which is designed to attract a fish’s attention. The lure uses movement, vibration, flash and color to bait fish. Many lures are equipped with one or more hooks that are used to catch fish when they strike the lure (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fishing_lure)

Eric took me on my first fishing trip when he was stationed at Fort Hood, Texas. I didn’t even know half the knowledge as I did when he took me. I was blind going in and had no idea what fish were what and what exactly to catch them on. We considered this our “first fishing date” and it was one of the best dates I had ever been on!

He seemed so much of a natural at this, and I was even more attracted to him than I ever was before. I guess he really was a country boy at heart and I was so thankful to him in my life. He’s shown me so much about fishing and even showed me that I could even go fishing on my own without him.

Once I knew how much I really loved fishing, it was all I wanted to do. When I finally made my final move to Texas to officially live the Army life, fishing was our first outing. He knew how to bait a hook, and he knew I could too! we were perfect for each other (haha!)

“a couple that fishes together, stays together”

Living in Fort Hood/Killeen, Texas, there were so many fishing spots that my husband and his friends found including “in the hole” spots. When I mean in the hole, I mean tall shrubbery, grown up weeds, beer cans everywhere, and junk that literally made no sense of being there. It was one of our favorite fishing spots, and the more we fished there, the more people knew about it.

We found new spots along the way, and even made more friends in the process while doing so. We even tried a little spot on Belton Lake and even caught my first small Bass, while my husband was catching trees!

After catching this small mouth Bass, I was even more addicted to fishing. It may have taken a few tries and a couple trees later. After this picture was taken, 3 hours later, I was as red as a lobster. Im pretty sure I even had a touch of sun poisoning for a few days. This was my first real, big fish. Belton Lake was HUGE. I didn’t think I would ever catch anything since it was so big.

Being in Fort Hood, the fishing was incredible and then we were given orders to Georgia. Georgia is notorious for fishing, hunting, and camping. Ever since we’ve been here, we’ve been fishing twice (its been cold). In our apartment complex, we have a lagoon full of fish but yet, I didn’t catch anything.

With my husband being in the military, the post is not big but the fishing is amazing. My husband took me to a few ponds with one of his friends, and the views were quite beautiful. We went fishing in 3 different ponds, my husband and I didn’t catch anything other than green algae. My husbands friend caught 5. How does that even happen? I used the same lure the whole time and got a couple of bites, but nothing big.

When I’m with my husband, fishing is our favorite thing to do and it only draws me closer to him. He’s a natural and the country boy he grew up to be. The conversations are deep and it just feels “right.”

Can you tell me any good fishing spots you’ve been to? How big of fish have you caught? Those only two pictures you’ve seen are the biggest I have ever caught. It’s a proud moment when you catch anything at all.

  1. Your story took me way back to when I was a little girl back in South Georgia . The old aunts, as I used to call them, would come get my brother me and take us to the pond. It was always so hot! We had cane poles! I don’t ever remember catching a fish. Occasionally we would have large fish frys at someone’s house where all of the family members would attend. The fish were always full of bones, but were served with hush puppies and sweet tea!
